Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God. Ephesians 5:1-2 NLT
What a powerful scripture hidden in the book of Ephesians! Imagine you are a pleasing aroma to God. After being stuck in my house for two days with four other people and two dogs, a pleasing aroma sounds like an experience that I wouldn’t pass on. It is right up there with a trip to somewhere warm, sunny and snow free. I am sure I do not need to go into detail about the stink in my house with all these people crowded in here and windows tightly shut and doors locked and layered with blankets to keep the cold drafts out of my 1950’s ranch. Let’s just say that Lysol isn’t doing the trick.
Anyway, back to this scripture… When we do something in our life that imitates what God would do, God is so pleased. Just a simple thing will show God that we love Him just as much as He loved us when he sacrificed himself on the cross. Now I am no rocket scientist but to say that me baking a meal for a family in need is the same as God dying for me on a cross is crazy! But folks, I am here to tell you that is exactly how God feels. “It is a pleasing aroma to God.”
I think about how many times in life I compare myself with another (probably everyday). I compare my deeds with another person’s deeds.
I compare my joys with another person’s joys. I compare my struggles with another person’s struggles. I compare my unfair day with another person’s day. I compare my attitude with another person’s attitude.
Are you getting the point? No, how about this?
I don’t understand why God gives that undeserving person so many chances…
It isn’t fair that my friend’s family gives so little but seems to live life so fully…
How can they possibly afford that when he has been out of a job for so long and all we do is save and we can’t afford it?
I had such a great day today, but why is that person getting a good day after what he/she did?
Life has been really rotten lately; one problem after another. Why do I get all the struggles and that person gets nothing?
Comparisons. We all do it. We all compare our issues and dilemmas to other people. God never does. God accepts us where we are and takes joy in knowing that each baby step of our faith is pleasing to Him. “It is a pleasing aroma to God.” Our tasks and well meaning “Good Samaritan” acts will never compare to His ultimate sacrifice on the cross for our sins. Never. We will never match up to Him, yet He doesn’t see it that way. He sees us as pleasing to Him.
Don’t give up on imitating God because every step you take toward Him will be worthwhile. Every step draws you closer and closer to the Holy One. Every step takes you further and further into the beauty of faith. Even better – every step “is a pleasing aroma to God.”
