Mercy Triumphs Judgment

Making Room For God

2 Corinthians 3:17  Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty

Every morning I wake up to my newspaper and read that verse at the top.  Until today, I really hadn’t given it much thought.  Newspaper, liberty, freedom of speech – they all just seemed to flow with the news.

The truth of that scripture is that we can only see the Truth if we allow the Spirit of the Lord to work within us.  God unveils the truth for us when we allow the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts.

Unfortunately, finding that Truth can prove to be difficult.  I often say that the newspaper gives us information, but the truth must be found on our own.  When I get my information from people (media, news reporters, friends, etc), then there will always be some hint truth and some gossip.  You have to dig through the gossip to get to the truth of the matter.  That is just the way it works.

2 Cortinthians 3:17 is telling me that the only way to gather the truth is with the Lord.

In my short life, I have been burned by media reports.  As a daughter of a politician, I was hurt more than once by how the newspaper reported my father.  I prayed that people would dig through the gossip to get to the truth.  I prayed that people would know that my dad was a great man.  I prayed that people would see that his political life was truly based on humility and not pride.  The day my dad died of a massive heart attack, the newspaper blasted their own story on the front page of our Metro Section.  Instead of putting in our obituary, they chose to print a vile, ugly picture of my father.  It was the newspaper’s words, not ours that people would read.   Our beautiful rendition of my father would not be seen by anyone.

Sometimes we have to really dig through the dirt to get to the good honest truth.  Some people will be willing to do that and others won’t.  Judgment of others can turn families upside down.  Even media can judge, so be careful what you read and remember it is just information – God will lead you to the truth.

Everyday when we gossip and spread lies about others, we are undermining God’s work.

James 2:12-13   Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Even James knew that Mercy shown to others is more important to God than judging them.  God will be the judge.  We do not need to do His judging for Him.  In fact, we need to show Mercy to others that are being judged.  “Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

I have yet to read any report of Pope Francis’ call to prayer for tomorrow.  Sometimes our news does not report the good that happens out of very bad situations.  Millions will be praying tomorrow.  Millions will be fasting.  Yet the Truth has not come out in our local media.  Pray for that Truth.  Pray for our country.  Pray for our leaders.

I encourage everyone – no matter what religion – to pray for the United States politicians and the Syrians.  Set time aside to really pray for what is about to happen between our two countries and pray for those making very difficult decisions.

Seek out the truth in all situations.  Show Mercy before judgment.    Know that liberty will only be found where God is present.  So PRAY for God to be present!
